Zaratsu polishing Grand Seiko watches are known for going through Zaratsu polishing. Zaratsu polishing is done with a lapping machine. The front wheel is used for polishing cases, instead of the conventional side. It results in a completely smooth and mirror-like polish. It is perhaps the best polishing done anywhere in the world. A craftsperson needs to undergo at least 5 years of training before they are allowed to do the Zaratsu polishing.  9. Grand Seiko Watchmakers are masters of their craft It might seem unbelievable, but Grand Seiko watchmakers need to go through a minimum of 10 years training period to be inducted as bronze-level watchmakers. Switzerland is home to many luxury watch houses. Among the most notable are companies like Tissot, Tag Heuer, Omega, and of course, Zenith. Amid this list of illustrious names, Zenith Singapore has been able to carve a place for its own. But how much do you know about this legendary watch brand? Today we will talk about 5 defining moments in the history of Zenith watches. 1.The history of Zenith Watches The story of Zenith watches traces its origin back to a single person: George Favre-Jacot. His sole mission was to create a watch that defies all expectations. Even in his younger days, he was already making a name as an apprentice in the famous Swiss watchmaking industry. Favre-Jacot has a close bond with some of the best architects of that time. This bond is reflected in the way Zenith watches were thought of and conceptualized. Among the architects having close ties with Favre-Jacot were Le Corbusier and Alphonse Laverrière.  The formal journey of the Zenith watch began in 1865. A 22-year-old Farve-Jacot started his own watch manufacturing unit in a tiny workshop in Switzerland’s Le Locle. He was highly motivated and inspired by the American watch brands Waltham and Elgin, especially of the way they made use of mass production units to roll out affordable watches. At this point, the company got its name ‘Zenith‘. Among the successful modern-day models are the Zenith Pilot Type 20 Chronograph, Zenith Captain Moonphase, Zenith ELITE Classic, and several more.  2.The story of Zenith El Primero Zenith first showed signs of its brilliance in 1960. That year they introduced the Calibre 5011K movement. The highlight of this new movement was its remarkable precision which was unprecedented. It was incorporated heavily into marine chronometers, pocket watches, and standard clocks. In 1969 came the model that sealed Zenith‘s position as one of the leading watchmakers in the world. The launch of Zenith El Primer changed everything. It was the first integrated automatic chronograph that the world had ever seen. Word of the watch’s marvel reached worldwide in a short time. To this day, the El Primero remains one of the most accurate calibers and can measure an astounding 1/10th of a second. A renovated model with the name Zenith Defy El Primero 21 made use of the famous El Primero movement to become one of the most successful watches in recent days.  50th El Primero Anniversary 03.A384.400/21.C815 3.Loss and revival of the Zenith El Primero Being the genius of a watch that it was, Zenith El Primero’s journey is worthy of a movie in itself. In the 1970s came the quartz crises that shook the Swiss watchmaking industry to its very core. All brands started rethinking their watch production tools and techniques. In such a circumstance, the parent company of Zenith watches made a decision to exclusively make quartz watches to stay competitive in the market. This mandate sparked fear into some of the employee’s minds. One of them was Charles Vermont, without whom we would have probably lost the Zenith El Primero. He single-handedly kept all the designs and tools required for Zenith’s mechanical caliber, in fear that they would be destroyed or forgotten. Until 1984, Vermont safely kept away all the plans, designs, and documents. During 1983, the quartz crisis was nearly over and the Swiss watchmaking industry was making steady progress. Consequently, the demand for mechanical watches shot up once more. At this point, to everyone’s wonder, Charles Vermot disclosed the fact that he had kept the plans of El Primero hidden. Once more, El Primero production began, and to everyone’s joy, it was a success again. Chronomaster El Primero 03.20416.4061/51.C700 4.Mahatma Gandhi and his Zenith Watch Pocket watches from Zenith were a priced possession for many eminent personalities in the twentieth century. Many reasons account for this popularity. Among the most prominent are the compact size of the watches despite a complicated alarm mechanism, durability, and of course, the legendary precision. In the long list of eminent people owning Zeniths, perhaps the most significant was Mahatma Gandhi’s name. It comes as a shock, especially since Gandhi is known for his austere lifestyle and renunciation of material wealth. So how did the watch end up in Gandhi’s hands? Zenith watches made their way into India in 1914. It was the time when the seeds of the Indian freedom movements were being planted. At this time, the would-be Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, gifted Mahatma Gandhi a Zenith Pocketwatch. What was rather unexpected for Indira Gandhi was the fact that Mahatma Gandhi actually grew fond of the watch and reportedly used it regularly. It is among the few pieces of material possession that Gandhi had with him till the end of his life. On the 5th of March 2009, Gandhi’s Zenith pocket watch was auctioned off in New York. With some of his other possessions, the auction generated a total cost of $2,096,000.  What many people do not is that Gandhi’s Zenith watch was once stolen during a journey. We can find evidence of this in Gandhi’s personal notebooks. Interestingly enough, the thief’s conscience was pricked by the fact that he had stolen from the person who was fighting for his own freedom. Overcome with guilt, the thief returned the watch to Gandhi. Gandhi famously forgave the thief and blessed him.  photo from: Hautetime.com 5.Zenith watches have been to space While the honor of being the first watch to make it to the moon will go to the Omega Moonwatch, Zenith actually has the first watch to have survived a jump from space. This extraordinary feat was accomplished by Felix Baumgartner, an Austrian skydiver. It all started with the Red Bull Stratos mission. It was a mission to take a person to the edge of the earth, into space. From there, a diver would be launched through a pressurized capsule. Baumgartner was the first person to attempt a freefall from the edge of the earth. It was quite literally a jump from the sky. While executing this superhuman feat at a height of 128,000 feet from the earth’s surface, he was wearing a Zenith Stratos Flyback Striking 10th. At no point in time had any watch lived through such extreme conditions. Successfully surviving the fall guaranteed the Zenith Stratos Flyback Striking 10th’s position as among the best adventure watches ever. Baumgartner’s watch was exactly like any other Zenith Stratos Flyback watch, with the exception of a modified case back. The back of the case of this edition comes with Baumgartner’s engraving and an honorary text around the edge. The Omega Speedmaster is a watch with an iconic design and a storied history, one that is inextricably linked to the period of human spaceflight. The Speedmaster can brag about being the first watch an astronaut donned before stepping on the moon’s surface. It’s also rumored that it’ll be the only watch capable of being worn on Mars when a manned expedition is undertaken safely. The Speedmaster is still as popular among novice collectors and dedicated aficionados as it was when the watch originally debuted. Omega Speedmaster watches are not automated. They need to be wound manually. Note that any automatic watch is powered by the force of gravity, rendering it worthless in a zero-gravity (or low gravity) setting. The Birth of Omega Speedmaster The Omega Speedmaster was not created with astronautics in mind. In 1957, it was debuted as a professional and motorsport chronograph, joining the ranks of the classic chronographs of 1920s and 1930s. The Omega 28.9 chronograph from the collection was Omega’s debut compact wrist chronograph. Omega‘s status as the exclusive timekeeper for the prestigious Olympic Games was cemented by these watches. The natural question to come to mind is that how did a motorsport chronograph make its way to space and the moon? Let’s find out how this chronograph made its way to the moon. The Apollo Mission and Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch The Apollo mission was intended as a successor to Project Mercury, the project that launched the first Americans in space during President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s tenure. In addition, Apollo 8 offered the very first nationally streamed photographs of the celestial bodies to an estimated 50 million spectators across the United States. This expedition, like Apollo 10, orbited the Moon and assessed numerous spaceship parts and components. With the launch of the Apollo mission, NASA began looking for a trustworthy wristwatch to function as the space program’s authorized wristwatch. They started by sending out tender documents to a small handful of companies. Companies that received the opportunity were Elgin, Benrus, Hamilton, Mido, Lucien Piccard, Omega, Bulova, Rolex, Longines-Wittnauer, and Gruen. Only four of the 10 brands responded to the request. Omega, Longines-Wittnauer, Rolex, and Hamilton were among them. Why a chronograph? The explorers would gear up on the moon’s surface and activate the wristwatch a little before putting on their headgear. They were able to see a small digital screen. Since it didn’t always work, they had to rely on that wristwatch as a fall back. It explains the immediate ruling out of Hamilton. Hamilton was rejected for presenting a pocket watch, which did not meet NASA’s requirements. The Rolex 6238, the Longines-Wittnauer 242T, and the Omega Speedmaster were the other eligible watches. These were subjected to an array of testing. Temperature cycling in near-vacuum, linear acceleration, and high and low temperature was among the issues tested. Mechanical hand-wound chronographs were used in all of the tests. The very first quartz watch and the first automated chronograph would not be released until 1969. The NASA space program had already begun by that time.  The victory of Omega Speedmaster The findings were ultimately released on 1st March 1965. In some of the extreme tests, the Rolex model ceased to function twice and even failed in a temperature test. Longines-Wittnauer also failed two tests. Overall, both watches performed unsatisfactorily. The Omega Speedmaster, on the other hand: performed great. It was ahead of the other two in almost all the tests. In one of the tests, the illuminating coating on the dial was smashed, but the Omega chronograph operated admirably overall. It was a resounding victory for the Speedmaster. NASA, on the other hand, offered a few tweaks, including a 24-hour turning bezel and bright indications over elapsed time displays. Speedmaster Moonwatch Co-Axial 311.63.44.51.06.001 Omega Speedmaster: Professional, Practical, and Tough Having survived NASA’s brutal tests was in itself enough to push Omega Speedmaster to the list of the greatest watches ever. Its journey to the moon is marked with innovation, creativity, and the human endeavour to achieve new heights. The Speedmaster already underwent a few more alterations by 1969, and at this point, the model begins to take over the form of the iconic Speedmaster we currently know. With a sturdier and bigger 42mm case design, the reference ST105.021 was designed to be more durable. It’s the same model that Neil Armstrong wore during the Apollo 11 flight. The 145.012, which had even significantly wider pushers, was worn by Michael Collins. The famed Omega Caliber 321 movement was utilized in both versions.  Buzz Aldrin wore the Speedmaster ST 105.012. In effect, it is the only watch actually worn on the surface of the moon. Buzz Aldrin’s watch inspired the legendary name Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, from which the later Omega Speedmaster Moonphase and other collections would be later inspired. In a sad turn of events, Aldrin’s Omega chronograph was stolen while in transit to a museum in the 1970s. Apollo 13 was abandoned in orbit after a fuel tank explosion 200,000 miles from Earth. In such circumstances, a Speedmaster was employed to synchronize the critical 14-second engine ignition that insured the spacecraft’s safe entry to the earth.
