A Quick Guide to Grand Seiko: 10 Things You Should Know

People who are even remotely acquainted with the world of horology would not need an introduction to the Grand Seiko. For the uninitiated, it can be safe to say that the Grand Seiko is the best piece of watchmaking that has come out of Japan.  Japan is known for its exquisite craftsmanship in everything they do. Grand Seiko is no exception. Each piece is carved with creativity and precision. Seiko is known around the globe for its mind-boggling precision in movement, and Grand Seiko lives up to that reputation. Let’s find out ten things about the Grand Seiko that you may or may not know. 1. The history of Grand Seiko The story of the Grand Seiko begins with the story of Seiko. Seiko had proven its mettle in the world of watchmaking by the 1950s. It was at par, if not superior, to the Swiss watchmakers of the time. Despite its success, Seiko was always more of an affordable premium watch which did not make it to the topmost tier. To change this, Seiko introduced the Grand Seiko line in 1960. It was nothing like anything that people had seen before. Being of Japanese origin, Swiss watchmakers were naturally skeptical of it. But once the Grand Seiko secured the 4th position in the Swiss Observatory tests for chronometric performance, there was no more room for suspicion for anyone. Thus began the journey of the Grand Seiko Japan gifted the world one of the best watch lines ever. There are also 6 Grand Seiko Singapore shops located in Singapore now. 2. Seiko and Grand Seiko The difference between Seiko and Grand Seiko is often not known to many. To put it simply, we can say that the Grand Seiko is the more refined, high-end version of the Seiko. Grand Seiko watches are made with only the finest watchmakers and a team of experts with the best materials. However, this does not mean that the Seiko watches are any less. They simply fall into different categories. Seiko watches are renowned in their own right. Grand Seiko has taken the game to the next level altogether. In all aspects, Grand Seiko stands shoulder to shoulder with any other brand, be it TAG Heuer or Omega, or Rolex.  3. Grand Seiko has a ‘grammar of design’ The legendary watch designer Taro Tanaka gave the Grand Seiko what is now known as their ‘grammar of design’. Simply put, these were a set of principles that would be employed in every stage of the watch manufacturing process. All Grand Seiko watches, starting from the 1960s and 70s to the present day, abide by the grammar of design. To give an example, the grammar of design includes the special visual signs you see in the Grand Seiko watches. The double index at 12’o clock is one of the many examples.  Heritage SBGP013 4. The Grand Seiko Snowflake Arguably the greatest watch from the house of Grand Seiko is the Grand Seiko Snowflake, SBGA211. This watch is representative of the craftsmanship that goes into Grand Seiko. The design is a work of genius. It insinuates the scene of falling snow, which the watchmakers were able to see from the Shinshu watch studio, where they worked on the watch. However, the design is subtle and abstract, making it possible to have multiple interpretations. All the components of the snowflake, from the case to the tugs, are inspired by natural elements. All the parts are made by human hands. No two Grand Seiko Snowflakes will ever be exactly the same.  Spring Drive Stainless Steel / Snowflake SBGA211 5. Grand Seiko Spring Drive Movement From a brand that is so meticulous about every step, expecting a premium movement would not be wrong. And thankfully, Grand Seiko does not disappoint either. Their spring drive movement was a game-changer in the world of horology. This exquisite movement works on traditional mainspring, incorporating a number of gears and levers. Instead of a conventional lever escapement, this movement uses a glide wheel. It has revolutionized watchmaking by bringing the precision of the quartz movement to mechanical watches.  Sport Collection 9R Spring drive GMT SBGE255 6. Grand Seiko Quartz Movement When it comes to quartz movements, Grand Seiko is not behind anybody. The new 9F quartz movement may as well be the most advanced quartz movement in the world. The movement is a result of years of dedication and work. It has an astounding battery life of 3 years and a precision of no more than 10 seconds in a year. The caliber 9F82 is a renovated and improved version of the caliber 9F62. 9F Quartz SBGX265 7. Grand Seiko is truly in-house A lot of brands claim to complete all the operations in-house, but the claims come with a few caveats. Not for Grand Seiko however. This brand is so obsessed with quality and precision that they even grow their own crystal quartz. Without it, we would have probably never seen the legendary 9F quartz movement or the Spring Drive movement. Everything from escapements to hairsprings to alloys is made in-house. 8. Zaratsu polishing Grand Seiko watches are known for going through Zaratsu polishing. Zaratsu polishing is done with a lapping machine. The front wheel is used for polishing cases, instead of the conventional side. It results in a completely smooth and mirror-like polish. It is perhaps the best polishing done anywhere in the world. A craftsperson needs to undergo at least 5 years of training before they are allowed to do the Zaratsu polishing.  9. Grand Seiko Watchmakers are masters of their craft It might seem unbelievable, but Grand Seiko watchmakers need to go through a minimum of 10 years training period to be inducted as bronze-level watchmakers. Above that are the silver and gold levels. Grand Seiko is dedicated to continuing the education and training of watchmaking in Japan and across the world. Horological Society in New York is run by the sponsorship of Grand Seiko, rolling out expert watchmakers regularly.  9R Spring Drive SBGE227 10. Micro Artist Studio Grand Seiko has a special team of expert designers and watchmakers who work on the next level of premium watchmaking called the Micro Artist Studio. This is almost like a hall of fame of watchmakers, and only the best have the opportunity of being a part of this team. The presence of such a dedicated team of experts explains the ever-growing success of Grand Seiko. Read More : Suunto Rolex Omega IWC Watches Breitling Cartier Hublot Hamilton Chopard Panerai

  3. Getting to Know Zenith: 5 Things You Should Know

Getting to Know Zenith: 5 Things You Should Know

Switzerland is home to many luxury watch houses. Among the most notable are companies like Tissot, Tag Heuer, Omega, and of course, Zenith. Amid this list of illustrious names, Zenith Singapore has been able to carve a place for its own. But how much do you know about this legendary watch brand? Today we will talk about 5 defining moments in the history of Zenith watches. 1.The history of Zenith Watches The story of Zenith watches traces its origin back to a single person: George Favre-Jacot. His sole mission was to create a watch that defies all expectations. Even in his younger days, he was already making a name as an apprentice in the famous Swiss watchmaking industry. Favre-Jacot has a close bond with some of the best architects of that time. This bond is reflected in the way Zenith watches were thought of and conceptualized. Among the architects having close ties with Favre-Jacot were Le Corbusier and Alphonse Laverrière.  The formal journey of the Zenith watch began in 1865. A 22-year-old Farve-Jacot started his own watch manufacturing unit in a tiny workshop in Switzerland’s Le Locle. He was highly motivated and inspired by the American watch brands Waltham and Elgin, especially of the way they made use of mass production units to roll out affordable watches. At this point, the company got its name ‘Zenith‘. Among the successful modern-day models are the Zenith Pilot Type 20 Chronograph, Zenith Captain Moonphase, Zenith ELITE Classic, and several more.  2.The story of Zenith El Primero Zenith first showed signs of its brilliance in 1960. That year they introduced the Calibre 5011K movement. The highlight of this new movement was its remarkable precision which was unprecedented. It was incorporated heavily into marine chronometers, pocket watches, and standard clocks. In 1969 came the model that sealed Zenith‘s position as one of the leading watchmakers in the world. The launch of Zenith El Primer changed everything. It was the first integrated automatic chronograph that the world had ever seen. Word of the watch’s marvel reached worldwide in a short time. To this day, the El Primero remains one of the most accurate calibers and can measure an astounding 1/10th of a second. A renovated model with the name Zenith Defy El Primero 21 made use of the famous El Primero movement to become one of the most successful watches in recent days.  50th El Primero Anniversary 03.A384.400/21.C815 3.Loss and revival of the Zenith El Primero Being the genius of a watch that it was, Zenith El Primero’s journey is worthy of a movie in itself. In the 1970s came the quartz crises that shook the Swiss watchmaking industry to its very core. All brands started rethinking their watch production tools and techniques. In such a circumstance, the parent company of Zenith watches made a decision to exclusively make quartz watches to stay competitive in the market. This mandate sparked fear into some of the employee’s minds. One of them was Charles Vermont, without whom we would have probably lost the Zenith El Primero. He single-handedly kept all the designs and tools required for Zenith’s mechanical caliber, in fear that they would be destroyed or forgotten. Until 1984, Vermont safely kept away all the plans, designs, and documents. During 1983, the quartz crisis was nearly over and the Swiss watchmaking industry was making steady progress. Consequently, the demand for mechanical watches shot up once more. At this point, to everyone’s wonder, Charles Vermot disclosed the fact that he had kept the plans of El Primero hidden. Once more, El Primero production began, and to everyone’s joy, it was a success again. Chronomaster El Primero 03.20416.4061/51.C700 4.Mahatma Gandhi and his Zenith Watch Pocket watches from Zenith were a priced possession for many eminent personalities in the twentieth century. Many reasons account for this popularity. Among the most prominent are the compact size of the watches despite a complicated alarm mechanism, durability, and of course, the legendary precision. In the long list of eminent people owning Zeniths, perhaps the most significant was Mahatma Gandhi’s name. It comes as a shock, especially since Gandhi is known for his austere lifestyle and renunciation of material wealth. So how did the watch end up in Gandhi’s hands? Zenith watches made their way into India in 1914. It was the time when the seeds of the Indian freedom movements were being planted. At this time, the would-be Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, gifted Mahatma Gandhi a Zenith Pocketwatch. What was rather unexpected for Indira Gandhi was the fact that Mahatma Gandhi actually grew fond of the watch and reportedly used it regularly. It is among the few pieces of material possession that Gandhi had with him till the end of his life. On the 5th of March 2009, Gandhi’s Zenith pocket watch was auctioned off in New York. With some of his other possessions, the auction generated a total cost of $2,096,000.  What many people do not is that Gandhi’s Zenith watch was once stolen during a journey. We can find evidence of this in Gandhi’s personal notebooks. Interestingly enough, the thief’s conscience was pricked by the fact that he had stolen from the person who was fighting for his own freedom. Overcome with guilt, the thief returned the watch to Gandhi. Gandhi famously forgave the thief and blessed him.  photo from: Hautetime.com 5.Zenith watches have been to space While the honor of being the first watch to make it to the moon will go to the Omega Moonwatch, Zenith actually has the first watch to have survived a jump from space. This extraordinary feat was accomplished by Felix Baumgartner, an Austrian skydiver. It all started with the Red Bull Stratos mission. It was a mission to take a person to the edge of the earth, into space. From there, a diver would be launched through a pressurized capsule. Baumgartner was the first person to attempt a freefall from the edge of the earth. It was quite literally a jump from the sky. While executing this superhuman feat at a height of 128,000 feet from the earth’s surface, he was wearing a Zenith Stratos Flyback Striking 10th. At no point in time had any watch lived through such extreme conditions. Successfully surviving the fall guaranteed the Zenith Stratos Flyback Striking 10th’s position as among the best adventure watches ever. Baumgartner’s watch was exactly like any other Zenith Stratos Flyback watch, with the exception of a modified case back. The back of the case of this edition comes with Baumgartner’s engraving and an honorary text around the edge. 4. The history of Omega Speedmaster with NASA astronauts

The history of Omega Speedmaster with NASA astronauts

The Omega Speedmaster is a watch with an iconic design and a storied history, one that is inextricably linked to the period of human spaceflight. The Speedmaster can brag about being the first watch an astronaut donned before stepping on the moon’s surface. It’s also rumored that it’ll be the only watch capable of being worn on Mars when a manned expedition is undertaken safely. The Speedmaster is still as popular among novice collectors and dedicated aficionados as it was when the watch originally debuted. Omega Speedmaster watches are not automated. They need to be wound manually. Note that any automatic watch is powered by the force of gravity, rendering it worthless in a zero-gravity (or low gravity) setting. The Birth of Omega Speedmaster The Omega Speedmaster was not created with astronautics in mind. In 1957, it was debuted as a professional and motorsport chronograph, joining the ranks of the classic chronographs of 1920s and 1930s. The Omega 28.9 chronograph from the collection was Omega’s debut compact wrist chronograph. Omega‘s status as the exclusive timekeeper for the prestigious Olympic Games was cemented by these watches. The natural question to come to mind is that how did a motorsport chronograph make its way to space and the moon? Let’s find out how this chronograph made its way to the moon. The Apollo Mission and Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch The Apollo mission was intended as a successor to Project Mercury, the project that launched the first Americans in space during President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s tenure. In addition, Apollo 8 offered the very first nationally streamed photographs of the celestial bodies to an estimated 50 million spectators across the United States. This expedition, like Apollo 10, orbited the Moon and assessed numerous spaceship parts and components. With the launch of the Apollo mission, NASA began looking for a trustworthy wristwatch to function as the space program’s authorized wristwatch. They started by sending out tender documents to a small handful of companies. Companies that received the opportunity were Elgin, Benrus, Hamilton, Mido, Lucien Piccard, Omega, Bulova, Rolex, Longines-Wittnauer, and Gruen. Only four of the 10 brands responded to the request. Omega, Longines-Wittnauer, Rolex, and Hamilton were among them. Why a chronograph? The explorers would gear up on the moon’s surface and activate the wristwatch a little before putting on their headgear. They were able to see a small digital screen. Since it didn’t always work, they had to rely on that wristwatch as a fall back. It explains the immediate ruling out of Hamilton. Hamilton was rejected for presenting a pocket watch, which did not meet NASA’s requirements. The Rolex 6238, the Longines-Wittnauer 242T, and the Omega Speedmaster were the other eligible watches. These were subjected to an array of testing. Temperature cycling in near-vacuum, linear acceleration, and high and low temperature was among the issues tested. Mechanical hand-wound chronographs were used in all of the tests. The very first quartz watch and the first automated chronograph would not be released until 1969. The NASA space program had already begun by that time.  The victory of Omega Speedmaster The findings were ultimately released on 1st March 1965. In some of the extreme tests, the Rolex model ceased to function twice and even failed in a temperature test. Longines-Wittnauer also failed two tests. Overall, both watches performed unsatisfactorily. The Omega Speedmaster, on the other hand: performed great. It was ahead of the other two in almost all the tests. In one of the tests, the illuminating coating on the dial was smashed, but the Omega chronograph operated admirably overall. It was a resounding victory for the Speedmaster. NASA, on the other hand, offered a few tweaks, including a 24-hour turning bezel and bright indications over elapsed time displays. Speedmaster Moonwatch Co-Axial 311.63.44.51.06.001 Omega Speedmaster: Professional, Practical, and Tough Having survived NASA’s brutal tests was in itself enough to push Omega Speedmaster to the list of the greatest watches ever. Its journey to the moon is marked with innovation, creativity, and the human endeavour to achieve new heights. The Speedmaster already underwent a few more alterations by 1969, and at this point, the model begins to take over the form of the iconic Speedmaster we currently know. With a sturdier and bigger 42mm case design, the reference ST105.021 was designed to be more durable. It’s the same model that Neil Armstrong wore during the Apollo 11 flight. The 145.012, which had even significantly wider pushers, was worn by Michael Collins. The famed Omega Caliber 321 movement was utilized in both versions.  Buzz Aldrin wore the Speedmaster ST 105.012. In effect, it is the only watch actually worn on the surface of the moon. Buzz Aldrin’s watch inspired the legendary name Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, from which the later Omega Speedmaster Moonphase and other collections would be later inspired. In a sad turn of events, Aldrin’s Omega chronograph was stolen while in transit to a museum in the 1970s. The watch is reportedly one of the most expensive collectors watches anywhere on earth.  Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Tokyo 2020 Limited Edition 522.30.42.30.06.001 The legacy of Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch The journey from Omega Speedmaster Racing to Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch was far from over with the Apollo 11 mission. Even now, the watch is a useful piece of equipment in spaceflight. However, one well-known instance merits mention: the Speedmaster’s contribution in the intense Apollo 13 mission. Apollo 13 was abandoned in orbit after a fuel tank explosion 200,000 miles from Earth. In such circumstances, a Speedmaster was employed to synchronize the critical 14-second engine ignition that insured the spacecraft’s safe entry to the earth. Speedmaster Moonwatch Co-Axial 311.92.44.51.01.003 Since 1957, the Speedmaster family has developed tremendously. It didn’t merely entail the advancement of the fundamental concept or the inclusion of appealing versions such as the Racing Dial and the Ultraman. To enhance the Speedmaster into a more functional professional watch, completely fresh variants were released, showcasing the newest and finest technology. The house of Omega watches has maintained its integrity and craftsmanship to the present day. The Latest lines like the Omega Speedmaster Reduced have continued the tradition of highly functional, professional watches from the house of Omega. Omega has periodically released limited edition recreated versions of the original Omega Moonwatch, including the Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary and the Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition. 6. 6 Facts You Should Know Before Owning An Orient Watch

6 Facts You Should Know Before Owning An Orient Watch

The Orient Watch has been a recognized and respected watchmaking brand in the industry. The company is best known for its exceptional mechanical watches. It has been producing well-crafted automatic watches with its own in-house movements. Today, many watch companies are still trying to reach the success and the benchmark that Orient Watch has set for their watches.  Being one of the top three watch brands in Japan along with Seiko and Citizen, Orient Watch is known all over the globe today. The brand is now offering a wide range of watches with manufacturing facilities in different countries including Hong Kong, Singapore, Brazil, and of course Japan. On top of its renowned mechanical watches, Orient Watch has been delivering watches in quartz and solar power as well at very affordable prices.  If you are looking for a high-quality and affordable watch, an Orient Watch will be a perfect choice for you. Before getting an Orient watch on hand, you may need to know a few things more about Orient watches:  What You Should Know About Orient Watches Its Origin Can Be Traced Back to Over 100 Years Ago The Orient Watch Company was officially established in 1951, yet the origin of Orient Watch Company can be dated back to 1901 when its founder Shogoro Yoshida started his first watch store Yoshida Watch Shop in Tokyo, Japan. At the beginning of its business, the Yoshida Watch Shop was selling imported pocketwatches and gained its first success.  In 1920, Toyo Tokei Manufacturing was established by Yoshida and started to produce table clocks and gauges. Seeing the growing popularity of its products, Toyo Tokei Manufacturing expanded its business and started the production of wristwatches in 1934. In the following years, its business boomed and its watches became popular all over Japan. However, due to the poor economy after World War II in Japan, the company was closed in 1949.  One year after Toyo Tokei Manufacturing was shut down, the watch business of Yoshida returned very quickly in 1950, under a new name Tama Keiki Company. In 1951, the company changed its name to Orient Watch Company as we know it today. In the same year, the brand released the first Orient Star series and instantly attracted massive attention from many watch lovers and collectors.  Since then Orient Watch has grown and expanded their business overseas at a horrifying speed. Its watches are particularly popular in many Asian countries, for example, Orient Watch Singapore ADs. The Orient watches gained such high recognition due to its rich history and watchmaking expertise that had been acquired since 1901.   Classic Limited RN-KA0004L Seiko Does Not Own Orient Many people might have been confused that Orient is the subordinate of Seiko. However, Orient Watch Co. actually operates totally independently from Seiko Watches. We can consider that they are more like sister companies as both of their parent companies are owned by The Seiko Group.  The Seiko Group is a corporate group of 3 chief companies, Seiko Instruments, Seiko Holding Corporation and Seiko Epson Corporation. Although they are under the same group, these 3 companies operate independently without much interaction with each other.  Whilst the Orient Watch Company is owned by Seiko Epson and the Seiko Watch company is under Seiko Holdings Group. Since 2001, Seiko Epson had already become the majority shareholder (52%) of the Orient Watch company. Few years later in 2009 Orient Watch became wholly owned by Seiko Epson.  Therefore, the Seiko Watch Company does not own Orient Watch and they do not share movements as some people say. Star Contemporary Collection Slim Date RK-HK0001S Japanese Quality and Craftsmanship It is well known that Japanese-made products represent high quality and excellent craftsmanship. From electronics to automobiles, especially these technical products are known to be durable and advanced.  As one of the most famed Japanese watch brands, Orient watch company solely designs, creates and manufactures the watch entirely under the strict Japanese quality and standards.  The Orient Watch Japan company takes quality and craftsmanship very seriously when producing their watches. It can ensure that you will be able to have years of reliable service from the Orient watch you are going to buy. It would be an affordable yet amazing choice to be one of the watches for you to pass down to your family or loved ones. The brand is offering notable watches for both men and women. An Orient ladies watch must be a perfect anniversary gift for your loved one.  Star RK-AM0001SRK Orient Produces In-house Movements  As mentioned, Orient and Seiko do not share any watch parts including movements. Similar to Seiko, Orient Watch has been manufacturing their own in-house mechanical movements for years. To many Orient watch reviews, the brand is considered as a pure and real watchmaker for creating movements in house. The Orient in-house calibers 46 series is one of its popular movements and has been housed in many of its entry-level models like the popular Orient Mako I and Ray I for many years. Although being entry-level movements, they still keep up a high standard in quality and reliability as Orient in-house movements. Orient has been continuously upgrading the designs and functionalities for their own movements. Many current Orient watch models are upgraded from the Cal. 46 series into the advanced Cal. F6 series, including the renowned Orient Ocean watch Mako II and Ray II. These watches are equipped with more functions like hacking and hand winding. Orient Watch Are Economic Friendly Similar to how top watch brands would manage their models and lineup, Orient has also created collections and models in different levels to suit every budget for everyone. This is a common business move in order to attract potential audiences and captivate the maximum amount of its target markets. In general, the Orient watch family consists of an entry level lineup Orient and a higher level lineup Orient Star. There was a high-end lineup Royal Orient to cater the needs of high luxury watches but it was discontinued in 2016.  Their entry level watches have already attracted a global following as high-quality yet affordable mechanical timepieces.  Star Contemporary Collection Slim Skelton RK-HJ0001S Difference of Orient And Orient Star Some people would get confused about the difference between Orient and Orient Star. As stated earlier, Orient is the brand’s entry-level while Orient Star is its higher-level series.  Orient collections focus on classic, standard pieces that are more affordable. On the other hand the Orient Star consists of a range of more complex watches at higher prices. The Orient Star watches are mainly equipped with more advanced complications and features.  Read More : Suunto Rolex Omega IWC Watches Breitling Cartier Hublot Hamilton Chopard Panerai

IWC Watch: A Review of Its Timeless Collection

Being one of the world’s top watch brands, the International Watch Company (IWC) is renowned for producing excellently crafted luxury watches. The brand is currently housing six signature watch families that each of which has gained a huge amount of admirers over the world. Together they offer high-quality watches in every style, from professional tool watches, sports watches to dress watches. These IWC watches, including the famous IWC Pilot’s watches, IWC Portugieser and more, have been consistently popular around the world for decades. History of IWC Holding up a fascinating history, The legendary watch brand IWC Schaffhausen has been deeply rooted in American entrepreneurship and the watchmaking traditions of Switzerland’s Schaffhausen area.  The company was originally established by a young and talented American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones in 1868. In the beginning the company specialized in producing pocket watches. Within a short span of time, the IWC pocket watches had gained high popularity in Europe.  The company continued to strive for innovations and breakthroughs. It released its first wristwatches in 1899 and produced its first calibers for wristwatches in 1915. Its first calibre 75 movement had no second displays, but very soon its next caliber 76 movement was already equipped with a small seconds display. Since then, the company continued to create advanced movements for their watches.  Until the 1930s after its launch of two flagship collections, the IWC watches grabbed the attention of the world. In 1936 the IWC Special Pilot’s Watch was released. The watch featured an arrowhead index on a rotating bezel in order to display the takeoff times. The remarkable function was very useful to the military and these IWC watches had soon been used by many pilots.  Throughout the decades, IWC has been expanding its popular collections and released countless notable timepieces that have amazed watch collectors all over the globe.  Popular IWC Watch Collections Currently, IWC is focusing on its six main watch families that have remained bestselling collections through the decades. The company manages to preserve and elevate the essence of each lineup while incorporating latest technologies and styles into them. To purchase a IWC watch Singapore is one of the best places that offer reasonable prices. Let’s take a brief look at each of the iconic IWC watches:   The IWC Portugieser The IWC Portugieser collection was originally introduced in 1939 with the reference 325. It was created under a special request of two Portuguese businessmen for a robust wristwatch that could perform high precision as a marine chronometer.  Addressing this custom order, IWC used a men’s pocket watch calibre 74 and placed it into a 41.5 mm wristwatch case. As a result, a large and legible stainless steel watch, the first Portugieser watch was born. Its railway-track-style chapter ring, the large Arabic numerals, and the slender feuille hands are the defining characteristics of this timeless timepiece. Today the IWC Portugieser collection is already the most popular and recognizable IWC watch. This watch is an icon of modern elegance well known for its plus size features and classic craftsmanship.  Portugieser IW500701 IWC Ingenieur In 1955, IWC introduced the IWC Ingenieur watch housing its first in-house automatic movement 85 Calibre. The name of the watch, “Ingenieur”, refers to “engineer” and “a person who works with machinery” in French. As suggested by the name, IWC Ingenieur was created as a trusted tool watch for mechanical professionals including engineers, technicians and scientists. With the remarkable calibre with Pellaton winding, this robust watch was capable of telling time precisely without being affected under tough conditions even with strong magnetic fields.  For over 60 years the IWC Ingenieur watch has gone through several modifications and updates since its launch. Now it is not only crafted for technicians and scientists, but also for the masses such as the watch lovers who desire a professional watch with the best quality.  Ingenieur IW380801 IWC Aquatimer Seeing the rising trend of scuba diving, IWC Aquatimer was released in 1976 as the first water resistant watch of the brand. The watch offers all the features that divers would need. This IWC diver watch is water resistant up to depths of 200 m and it features a rotating bezel that can be set by a second crown for timing the dive.  Its classic black dial is equipped with large and luminescent numerals and hands for readability under conditions of poor visibility.  Over the decades the IWC Aquatimer watch has been updated with a handful of new versions. In 2014, IWC re-edited the Aquatimer collection with its latest technologies and ongoing trends. The brand has successfully retained the essence of the old model and integrated them to meet the needs of the current market. This IWC diver watch is now available in numerous variants of different case sizes, dials, metals and complications. Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Laureus Sport For Good IW379507 IWC Da Vinci Introduced in 1969, IWC Da Vinci is one of the most recognized collections of the brand. This IWC watch collection had attracted massive attention from many watch enthusiasts as the very first Swiss quartz watch.  The first IWC Da Vinci watch was powered by the groundbreaking Beta 21 movement. The “21” in its name refers to the number of brands and manufacturers, including IWC, that had participated in the development of this movement. The IWC Da Vinci watch was encapsulated by an extraordinary hexagonal case with long indices. For over 50 years, this IWC watch family line has been releasing numerous updated models with wide variations of styles.  Da Vinci IW356602 IWC Pilot’s Watch This IWC pilot watch collection is one of its very first watches that gained worldwide popularity and success for the brand. Its first Special Pilot’s Watch was released in 1936 especially for civil airmen.  To endure the tough conditions in the sky, the IWC Pilot watch is highly resistant to temperature ranging from -40 C to +40 C. Its anti-magnetic escapement and rotatable bezel for marking take-off times are also very important features to pilots. Later, IWC had also supplied watches for pilots in the Royal Air Force. Its Mark 11 Navigator watches have been distributed to the British air force, and those of other Commonwealth nations for a few decades. Over the years, the IWC Pilot’s watch collection has expanded with a wide range of complications, including chronographs and date displays, as well as new models. Seeing the success of the Pilot’s watch, the brand created the IWC Big Pilot’s Watch, with an extra large 46 mm case size, in 2002.  Pilot’s Watches IW510301 IWC Portofino IWC released the first Portofino watch as its most elegant watch in 1984. This IWC dress watch perfectly blended its bold oversized case along with an elegant slim profile. Its long Breguet-style hands and elongated Roman numeral indices have added an extra touch of vintage.  Its delicate moon phase complication is another distinguished feature of the IWC Portofino watch. Placed at the 3 o’ clock on the dial, the moon is plated in gold with a background in blue color.  Portofino Automatic 34 IW357404 Read More : Suunto Rolex Omega IWC Watches Breitling Cartier Hublot Hamilton Chopard Panerai

  8. Tudor Black Bay 58: The Ultimate Modern-day Tudor “Submariner”

Tudor Black Bay 58: The Ultimate Modern-day Tudor “Submariner”

Launched in 2018, Tudor Black Bay 58 is a classically styled contemporary diving watch from Tudor. At present, it is one of the most popular creations from the iconic Black Bay family. Water-resistant to 200 meters (660 ft), this modern interpretation of a legendary Tudor diving watch has a 39mm diameter case with a new in-house self-winding movement beating inside. The number 58 refers to the launching year of Tudor Submariner reference 7924, the source of inspiration of Black Bay 58. History and evolution Tudor was established in 1946 by visionary entrepreneur Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex. Tudor began producing diving watches in 1954. Naturally, it has derived its inspiration from the legendary Rolex Submariner watch. The first diving timepiece from the brand was the Oyster Prince Submariner reference 7922 with 100-meters water resistance. In 1958, Tudor launched its first dive watch with 200 meters water resistance, the reference 7924. This first-generation Tudor ‘Big Crown’ Submariner is the inspirational source of the Black Bay 58 series. The early generation Tudor dive watches are most-sought after by the passionate collectors of rare vintage sports watches. In 2010, Tudor launched the Heritage collection for introducing modern interpretations of some of its iconic timepieces. Among them, the Tudor Heritage Black Bay was launched as an appropriate tribute to the brand’s legendary diving timepieces. Presently known as Black Bay, it is a best-selling collection from the house of Tudor. This flagship series is comprised of diving watch models like Classic, Date, GMT, Bronze, P01 and Black Bay 58. Heritage Black Bay Fifty-Eight 79030N-0001 Tudor Black Bay 58 family The Tudor Black Bay 58 dive watch was introduced in 2018. Presently, the successful series is comprised of automatic diving watches featuring 316L stainless steel, 925 Silver or 18-carat gold cases. In stainless steel, two dial color versions are available: Black and Blue. The black dial version is topped with a matt black bezel-insert with pink gilded markings and numerals. The blue dial variant comes with a matt blue bezel-insert featuring silver gilded markers and numerals. The Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925 model features a sterling silver case with satin-finishing, a taupe (dark gray-brown) color dial and matt taupe bezel insert with silver gilded markings and numerals. The Black Bay Fifty-Eight 18K version comes elegantly dressed in an 18-carat yellow gold, satin-finished case, green dial and matt green bezel insert with gold gilded markings and numerals. Black Bay Fifty-Eight 79030B-0002 Special features Proudly displaying Tudor’s 70 years of dive watch legacy, this spectacular diving timepiece seamlessly blends traditional aesthetics and contemporary watchmaking. Aptly known as the perfect modern-day Tudor “Submariner”, Black Bay 58 stands out within Tudor’s popular Black Bay family. Its hallmarks are compact size, vintage style, contemporary features, a technically brilliant manufacture movement and the attractive price range.  (1) Compact case design Tudor has chosen classic proportions for the Black Bay 58 watch instead of following the existing trend of bold-sized diving wristwatches. To validate its vintage inspiration, it comes with a compact case measuring 39mm diameter. Its thickness is 11.9mm and lug-to-lug width is 47.5mm. In comparison, the Tudor Black Bay Classic models and new generation Rolex Submariners feature 41mm diameter cases. The compact size of Tudor Black Bay 58 naturally makes it an ideal timepiece for smaller wrists. The large winding crown, which highlights the Tudor rose in relief, is a nod to the first generation dive watches from the iconic brand. A domed sapphire crystal glass generously offers the clear of the domed dial. Heritage Black Bay Fifty-Eight 79030N-0002 (2) Vintage inspired rotating bezel Tudor Black Bay 58 is fitted with a uni-directional rotating bezel with a 60-clicks mechanism and coin-edges. Depending upon the variant, the bezel material can be stainless steel, sterling silver alloy or 18-carat gold. It is mounted with an anodized aluminium bezel-insert with glided markings and numerals. The bezel of this Tudor watch is smooth and easy to operate. The triangle indicator at the 0/60 position incorporates a lumed dot. The matte-finishing of the graduated bezel disc takes inspiration from vintage dive watches. (3) Domed dial inspired by classic dive watches Featuring a three-hand, no date configuration, the domed dial provides crystal-clear view. Its hour-markers and hands are embedded with Grade-A Swiss Super-LumiNova® luminescent material for ensuring legibility around the clock. The dial design is inspired by the Tudor diving watches produced during the 1950s. The emblematic snow-flake hand is the stand-out feature of all Black Bay 58 timepieces. (4) In-house movement with enhanced technical features Behind the brilliant chronometric performance of each Tudor Black Bay 58 watch is an in-house self-winding movement. The MT5402 manufacture calibre beats at 28,800 v.p.h (4 Hz) and efficiently provides an exceptional accuracy in all conditions. This state-of-the-art automatic caliber was introduced in 2018. Energized by a bidirectional rotor system, the movement offers a power reserve up to 70 hours. Its non-magnetic silicon balance spring ensures consistent timekeeping even in places where strong magnetic interferences are present. The Stop Seconds function allows the wearer to undertake quick and precise time-setting. Black Bay Fifty-Eight 79010SG-0001 (5) Excellent Bracelets and Straps At present, the stainless steel Tudor Black Bay 58 variants are available with the choice of a riveted steel bracelet, leather band or fabric strap. The silver version is available with genuine leather or fabric strap, secured with a silver buckle. The 18K Black Bay 58 model has a dark brown alligator strap secured with an 18-carat yellow gold buckle. An additional green fabric strap is also provided with the Yellow gold variant. (6) Accessible Pricing Tudor offers an attractive price range for its Black Bay 58 models when it compared to the identical diving watches available in the market. The Tudor black bay 58 Singapore price range of a stainless steel version is around S$ 5,100 for the metal bracelet and S$ 4,700 with the strap. The Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925 silver watch costs around S$ 6,000 while the 18K gold model retails just above S$ 23,100. Many enthusiasts prefer Tudor Black Bay 58 as an affordable alternative to Rolex submariner, which usually sells above S$ 12,000. Conclusion Boasting a neo-vintage style, Tudor Black Bay 58 is one of the most talked about contemporary wristwatches. Since its debut in 2018, this timepiece has been immensely popular among the divers with smaller wrists, diving watch enthusiasts and the passionate lovers of vintage style wristwatches. Prominently a recreational dive watch, the Black Bay 58 can also be easily worn as a comfortable daily wear accessory thanks to its compact dimensions. Tudor watches always stand above existing industry standards. Although its roots trace back to the 1950s, the Tudor Black Bay 58 utilizes modern technology and durable materials for ensuring durability, precision, reliability, robustness and high-quality finishing.
