The First Rolex Green Submariner

Introduced in 2010, the Rolex 116610LV has stroked the market so drastically that people who don’t normally wear watches know about it.

Long before the debut of the Rolex Submariner Hulk, Rolex Submariner has already been an iconic watch with decades of history behind. Let’s go back to 1953. In that year Rolex developed its ultimate diver’s watch – Rolex Submariner. It is incredibly tough and ultra-reliable as a functional sports watch which you could also use for formal occasions.

Over the years, Rolex has even expanded the collection with different material variations including full gold and two-tone models. When we speak of Rolex stainless steel Submariner, it was only limited to a black dial and bezel. It was only until 2003 the Submariner got its first green member.

In 2003, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Submariner collection, Rolex released the Submariner Date 16610LV featuring a bright green aluminum bezel. The “LV” in the reference number 16610LV stands for “lunette verde”– which means “green bezel” in French. By using the colour of Rolex brand, 16610LV, also known as Rolex Kermit gave a completely new look for Rolex Submariner.

The Launch of Green Cerachrom Submariner 116610LV

The Rolex Cerachrom Submariner generation began in 2008, the first models are the ones with precious metal such as yellow gold (Submariner ref. 116618) and white gold (Submariner ref. 116619). Finally in 2010, Rolex introduced stainless steel Submariner watches with Cerachrom bezels – the two 116610 models.

Just like its previous generation, Rolex offered the 2 options of a black steel Submariner and a green steel Submariner. However, unlike its predecessor Rolex Kermit 16610LV, the new 116610LV featured the green Cerachrom bezel with a matching green sunburst dial. Thanks to its all-green color profile and large super case, the Rolex lover quickly related it to the Hulk. The “Rolex Hulk” name has been widely spreaded since then.

The Discontinuing of Rolex Submariner Hulk

After a decade of production, Rolex stopped the production of the Submariner 116610LV in 2020. The brand replaced it with the brand new Submariner 126610LV featuring a 41mm steel case, a green Cerachrom bezel, and a black dial. Because of the similar outlook with the Rolex Kermit 16610LV, the new green Submariner 126610LV is often called Ceramic Kermit, Cermit, or Super Kermit.

When talking about the green Hulk Rolex watch, people would often conclude it with the term “form and function”. Indeed the Rolex Hulk is the rare green Rolex, there is so much more to this watch than its eye-catching colour. It is also one of those in the generation that features a list of the “firsts” for the Submariner collection including Super Case, Chromalight display, Cerachrom bezel, solid-link bracelet, and Glidelock clasp.

Super Case

Rolex 116610LV featured the classic 40mm case that all Submariner Date models preceding it, yet the shape of the case was modified. Together with its 11661x family members, the 116610 Submariner wears a thicker case known as the “Super Case” with fatter lugs, a stouter crown guard, and a wider bezel. The case of the Submariner 116610LV is made from 904L Oystersteel which is more corrosion-resistant. Of course like all the Submariner watches, the Hulk is water-resistant to 300 meters with the Rolex patented Triplock screw-down winding crown and a solid screw-down caseback.

Indeed the most outstanding characteristics of this Rolex Hulk must be its green bezel and dial. It is until now the first and the only Submariner to feature such a green sunburst dial. This distinctive green dial with sunburst finishing features the Mercedes luminescent hands. As one of the family members of Submariner Date, the date window is placed at the 3 o’clock position.

Cerachrom Bezel

Instead of the aluminum bezel of previous models, the bezel of the Rolex green  Submariner 116610LV is made of Rolex’s proprietary Cerachrom material. This special ceramic used by Rolex is made of zirconium dioxide, also known as zirconia. It is an exceptionally hard-wearing ceramic alloy with high corrosion resistance. Whereas the older style bezels will eventually fade and scratch over time, the corrosion-resistant

The markings of Hulk’s green bezel are coated in platinum leaving a fantastic shiny finish to the bezel. With the fine polishing, the Cerachrom bezel is able to keep the distinctive green colors, no matter how long the watch lives. Moreover, the zero marker on the bezel features a Chromalight luminescent capsule so it can be read in the darkest conditions. Of course, like all modern divers, the Submariner’s time-lapse bezel is unidirectional in motion (120 clicks) to avoid underestimating immersion times and it is graduated to 60 minutes.

Oyster Bracelet

Rolex has been using its special Oyster bracelet for many of its collections for decades. The solid bracelet has always been paired with the Submariner over the last 60 years too. Together with the new Super Case, the Oyster bracelet for the Rolex Hulk has been upgraded as well. Made of the Rolex 904L Oystersteel, the three-link Oyster bracelet comes together with its exclusive Glidelock system. It can help the wearers adjust the length of the bracelet with ease.

Rolex In-house 3135 Movement

The Rolex Submariner 116610LV housed its Caliber 3135 self winding mechanical movement. It features a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and the perpetual motor enables bidirectional self-winding. It is also a certified superlative caliber like all the Rolex in-house movements with a guaranteed precision of -2/+2 sec/day, with a 48-hour power reserve.

Conclusion

Despite its discontinuation, we can expect that the status as well as the price of the one and only one Rolex Hulk 116610LV would never fall. As long as you have a chance to get it, no matter a new one or a pre-owned, you will never regret it.
