This luxury brand was started by Guccio Gucci in 1921, and his son Aldo Gucci took it to new heights after Guccio Gucci’s demise in 1953. It became an icon of the Italian ''La Dolce Vita'' which refers to a relaxed and luxurious lifestyle. This was a golden era of economic prosperity in Europe.

The beginning of this company was very humble. They were a small luggage and leather goods manufacturing company that boasted of Italian fine leather. However, now the company has a presence in 487 locations and with revenue of more than 10 billion Euros.

The founder of this well-respected fashion brand Guccio Gucci was born in 1881 in a family of leather craftsmen. After opening the travel bags workshop in Florence in 1921, he ventured into other business lines and started manufacturing leather bags, wallets, shoes, gloves, belts, leather accessories, etc. The brand was doing very well in the initial years and the products made in this workshop were used by the rich and famous of Italy.

Guccio Gucci’s three sons Aldo Gucci, Rodolfo Gucci, and Vasco Gucci became the key shareholders of the company after the Second World War. The company launched some new products like Bamboo bags, loafers and moccasins, the Jackie Bag, the Flora scarf, and belt buckles with the double-G logo which became synonymous with the Gucci brand name.

In 1968, the haute couture brand ventured into the world of creating fashion lines. They opened their store on Rodeo Drive in Hollywood, U.S.A. The success story did not stop there. They launched their iconic Gucci watches and perfumes line in 1972.

In the 1980s, the company got into trouble and the family feuds caused many dents in the shareholding of the company. Guccio Gucci's family in spite of being the founders sold off their shares and left their claim to the original business by 1993. However, the French MNC Pinault Printemps Redoute acquired the company in 1999 and brought back the old respect and demand for the products.

Gucci got into the business of watchmaking after signing a licensing agreement for twenty-five years with Severin Montres Ltd. in 1972. This was a Swiss manufacturing company that used to manufacture world-class watches. In 1997, Gucci acquired Severin Montres Ltd.

This iconic acquisition allowed Gucci to have its say in the designing, manufacturing, promoting, advertising, and distribution of Gucci watches. Currently, the watch factory is located in Switzerland, and watches are manufactured in this facility and distributed across the globe.

Designed by the best creative minds

Dawn Mello took the role of executive vice president and chief designer for all the fashion lines of Gucci in 1989. In the initial years the three brothers used to oversee this work and then after the acquisition by PPR, a few new members joined the designing team.

American fashion designer Tom Ford took up the role of creative director for all the fashion lines of Gucci in 1994. Both Mello and Ford worked very hard to revive the iconic collections of the brand after it was acquired by PPR.

There were many young and talented fashion designers like Alessandra Facchinetti, John Ray, and Frida Giannini who joined the creative team over the years and in 2006. Frida Giannini was appointed as the creative director of the world-renowned fashion brand. However, in 2004, Ford had left the company and in 2014 Frida Giannini followed suit.

Since January 2015, Alessandro Michele is the creative director of the brand which has now established itself as a subsidiary of Kering Group. In December 2014, Marco Bizzarri was appointed as the CEO, and under their joint direction, the company is reaching new heights.
