  2. Introducing the New Rolex Oyster Perpetual Models (2020 Spring Version)

Introducing the New Rolex Oyster Perpetual Models (2020 Spring Version)

Rolex Oyster Perpetual is a timelessly class watch that represents the core value of Rolex. The simplistic and well-built design presents the purest form of a Rolex watch.  In 2020, together with other famous collections, a new generation of Oyster Perpetual in Rolex new watch 2020 are introduced. There are new colorful Oyster Perpetual models in both 36mm and 41mm, as well as updated 34mm versions.  The new Oyster Perpetual 41 mm with the reference 124300 gained the spotlight of the discussion. It comes with the largest case of the collection and a new in-house movement.  Rolex created both classic and genuinely fun versions for this Rolex 2020 entry watch. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41 debuted with seven dial color options. While there are “Stella-inspired” bright colors which have not been featured on Rolex dials for a long time, 2 basic color options are also introduced: black and silver. It received overwhelming responses from the fans that they can enjoy the heritage of Rolex in a more affordable package.  The Rolex OP family now comes in 5 size families – 28 / 31 / 34 / 36 and the 41mm. The Oyster Perpetual 39mm model is now discontinued and replaced with the new OP 41mm.  Now let’s explore more about the New Rolex 2020 Oyster Perpetual watches Everything about Rolex new model 2020 in Oyster Perpetual series Case Stated right in its name, the new generation continues using the ultra strong case in Rolex Oystersteel. The shape of the case remains the same, with the update on the case size: replacing the 39mm model with the 41mm one. Oyster Perpetual 39114300-0005 The proportions of the case are so well built that it is hard to tell the difference between the discontinued Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39 and the new Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41 just by looking. Yet such a slight difference does matter if you feel them on the wrist. Therefore some collectors welcome the update while some still prefer the old one. In this way, the discontinued Oyster Perpetual 39 still holds its value in the secondary market.  Oyster Perpetual 41124300-0001 Dials Dial designs Oyster Perpetual 41124300-0001 The design of new OP dials remains the same basic architecture like the old ones. The new OP 41 share the same dial as the Oyster Perpetual 36, while the OP 34 and 28 have their own nuances.  On the dials of the new OP 41 and OP 36, the hour markers are displayed in double bars at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, while others are single bars. As for the 28 mm and 34 mm versions, all the markers are displayed in single bars. Oyster Perpetual 36116000/7 There is also a small difference on the minute markers outside the periphery of the hour markers among the models. On the 41 and the 36 version, the five minute intervals are in the shape of squares. For the 34, instead of the squares, Roman numerals are used to indicate the hours. And on the 31 version, all the markers are lines with shorter and bold lines for the 5 minutes. The 28 mm models do not have any markings at the 5 minute intervals on the small dial. Besides, since these models are housing the new in-house movements, a small Rolex crown replaces the minute marker at 30, and the words “SWISS” and “MADE” replace the 29 and 31 markers respectively. Dial Colors The part that experienced the most updates should be the dial colors.  The 2 basic dial colors are a sunburst silver with gold hands and a black with silver hands. But the ones that gained all the talk of the world are the new bright “Stella-inspired” colors. The colors offered are bright blue, turquoise, yellow, coral, green plus a candy pink only on 36 and 31 mm models. Oyster Perpetual 36 Yellow Dial126000-0004 The new colours are similar to the ones that the company, Stella, developed for Rolex’s dials in the 1970s. They are both bright, and applied by a special lacquer process. Those models became what is known as the Stella dials today.  The candy pink dial is only offered in Oyster Perpetual 36 as well as 31 mm one. The hue is a rather bright pastel pink. Although Rolex classifies the OP 36 as a men’s watch, the candy pink OP 36 watch can be a fascinating watch for women as well. The candy pink color is offered only in the 36 and 31 mm models, while the 34 and 28 mm models are available only in the more classical Pink. The lighting angle is such that the dial appears darker than it would if it was facing the viewer. The rehaut is marked with the now standard laser engravings saying “ROLEX” all around, punctuated by the Coronet logo. Oyster Perpetual 31 Candy Pink277200-0009 Movements: Caliber 3230 and Caliber 2232 Rolex Caliber 3230 Both Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41 and 36 mm models house the Caliber 3230. This is a new Rolex in-house movement incorporating the Rolex patented Chronergy escapement. It is the same automatic movement featured in the new Rolex Submariner 124060. The Caliber 3230 beats at 28,800 bph, and can store up to 70 hours of power. With its Parachrom spiral, the 3230 movement has excellent resistance to shocks and magnetic fields. Like all Rolex watches, the Oyster Perpetual 41 and 36 meet the Superlative Chronometer specifications by Rolex and also obtained COSC chronometer certification. It is accurate to -2/+2 seconds a day on average. Rolex Caliber 2232 The Caliber 2232 is used in the Rolex watches for women – the OP 34, 31 and 28 mm versions. This new Caliber 2232 is the no-date version of movement 2236 that was introduced in 2014. The Caliber 2236 was the first Rolex movement using silicon balance spring which is called Syloxi. While the Caliber is the first 2232 movement with Syloxi escapement used in a stainless steel model. Both calibers beat at 28,800 bph with a 70 hour power reserve. The Rolex Caliber 2232 also meets the Rolex Superlative Chronometer specifications with COSC chronometer certification of accuracy +/-2 seconds a day maximum deviation. Wrap Up Oyster Perpetual 41 Blue Dial124300-0006 The Oyster Perpetual collection is almost Rolex’s bread and butter. There is a lot of attention paid to the new generation of the collection.  Numerous variations are available with its five model lines and multiple color options. The base design and architecture remains the same, yet the new models are different from the predecessors and to each other in the details. 4. 8 ways to make your own smartwatch

8 ways to make your own smartwatch

Introduction A Smartwatch is defined as a wristwatch-inspired wearable technology device that can execute various functions normally found in a Smartphone. For performing majority of these operations, it needs to be paired with a compatible Smartphone or any other electronic device. It can also perform various functions while staying unconnected. Before venturing into making your own smartwatch, you should be aware of various components and systems of the same. Operating systems Photo Credit : apple.com Just like the operating systems used in the modern computers, every Smartwatch requires an OS to efficiently manage all the applications and software associated with the particular gadget. The most popular Smartphone operating systems are Android and iOS. In addition to any of these programs, smart-devices feature several other software applications for various functions. Hardware We can divide the smartwatch hardware into two sections: The first section is the electronic module with display panel, battery and peripherals. The second one includes exterior parts like case, bezel, strap, crown, pusher and glass. The components included in the second section are typically found in traditional wristwatches. How to make your own smart-watch? Depending upon your expertise level, you can make a smartwatch by using several methods. Below, you can discover eight ways: 1. By attaching a smart-module You can create a smartwatch by attaching a pre-programmed smart-module on the case-back side of any analogue watch. This method does not ruin the aesthetics of your watch. Paired with a compatible Smartphone, this module converts your analogue timepiece to a wearable smartwatch. You may get such smart-modules from the market. 2. By interconnecting multiple modules Photo Credit : instructables.com If you are unfamiliar with the assembling of PCBs, you may prefer this method for assembling your own smartwatch. It typically consists of a watch-head and numerous swappable modules customized for various functions and sensors. Designed after the traditional wristwatch, the principal element itself is a smart-watch. The user can enhance its functionality by plugging in one or more supporting modules. Depends on your requirement, you can purchase and attach more number of modules in future. You can assemble an easily customizable smart-watch employing this technique. 3. By pairing with a Smart-strap Photo Credit : instructables.com You can create a smart-watch by attaching an E-strap with your analogue watch. The E-strap features a smart-buckle incorporating a digital display and the smart-watch module. This smart-buckle can be paired with your Smartphone for instantly accessing the multitude of connected functions. Two excellent examples of such innovative straps are, Frederique Constant E-Strap and Montblanc TimeWalker Urban Speed e-Strap. 4. By using interchangeable modules You can replace the existing analogue mechanism with a smart-watch module. For this, you need a customized smart module that can fit into the watchcase. You should have customized crowns and pushbuttons if necessary. Some watch brands offer two interchangeable modules with their smart-watches: one mechanical and one smart-watch. The TAG Heuer Connected Modular 45 is an example. You can easily switch over between analogue watch and smartwatch. During the process, utmost care must be undertaken to prevent damages to the modules and watch components. 5. DIY kit (with all components) Photo Credit : makerfabs.com Buy a DIY (Do It Yourself.) smartwatch kit, which typically includes multiple printed circuit boards, OLED display, rechargeable battery with connectors, watch-housing, strap and manuals. Your smartwatch DIY kit typically contain multiple Printed Circuit Boards like processor board, display unit and auxiliary PCBs. Interconnect these PCBs as mentioned to make the electronic heart of the smartwatch. Connect the battery provided with the kit and switch on the assembly. The LED will start displaying some basic indications like time, date, etc. The next step is software loading and checking. Connect the electronic module of the smartwatch with a computer using micro-USB cable. Upload the necessary codes from your computer. You should also download and install compatible Os and Apps in your Smartphone, which would act as the paring device when your smartwatch began functioning. After finishing the required programming, you can synchronize the electronic module with the Smartphone. Disconnect the micro-USB cable and check all the functions. You can then assemble the parts into the housing provided with the kit. Carry out the functional checks again. Secure it with the strap provided with the DIY kit, and your own smartwatch is ready now! 6. Open Source Smartwatch This method is extremely effective for computer software geniuses with less knowledge in assembling electronic components. Such people may choose to buy an open, hackable smartwatch, which can be converted into a full-fledged smartwatch by loading any open-source hardware platform and operating system. For example, Arduino is a popular open-source smartwatch hardware platform and AsteriodOS is an open-source operating system for smartwatches. On World Wide Web, you will find several open-source apps, which can be downloaded and utilized for your smartwatch. You can also modify or create custom apps using programming languages. 7. Self-Designed Smartwatch Photo Credit : tinycircuits.com A main issue with all DIY kit based smart watches are their bulky and unattractive design. It is mainly due to large-sized PCB boards and exterior. If you are really interested to make a slimmer smartwatch featuring your own design, there is an effective technique. For manufacturing such a portable device, you need tiny Printed Circuit Boards and a small case. Producing miniature PCBs in-house is extremely difficult, because it needs state-of-the-art CNC machines. Don’t worry, you can make miniature circuit boards with the help of made-to-order PCB manufactures. The circuit-board of a smartwatch can be drawn with any PCB design software, in round or square shape as per your requirement. You can subsequently submit the blueprint of your miniature printed circuit board to any custom PCB makers. You can also create a small-sized LED display utilizing the above-mentioned way. After receiving these assemblies, interconnect them and add necessary components, peripherals and battery, and your custom smartwatch module is ready now. Its smart functions can be activated by loading any supporting operating system and other software programs using a micro-USB cable and computer. You can also check its sync with compatible smart phones. Simultaneously, you can start designing case, bracelet and other components. You can draw up the exterior parts of the smartwatch with any product design software. With the help of your own 3D printer, it is possible to produce the case, bracelet and pushbuttons. Otherwise, you can make use of online or offline 3D printing services. These external parts can be also manufactured using traditional methods, in-house or with the help of specialized workshops. Other components like protective glass are easily available for purchase. After properly assembling the electronic module into the watch case, you can once again check and certify the smartwatch functionality by paring with a compatible Smartphone.   8. Make by salvaging old mobile phones Photo Credit : gsmarena.com You can make a smartwatch using the components of an old mobile phone. The cellular phones with small screens (for example Nokia 1100) are preferable. You also require some additional components like an open-source microcontroller board, a blue-tooth module, resistors, diodes, ribbon cables and small switches, micro-USB charging cable and a compatible battery. The individual should be in position with soldering equipment and related tools for scrapping the old phone. From a mobile phone, you can take out LCD screen, speaker and Vibrating Motor. Its screen cover can be used as the protective glass for your smartwatch. Now, you are ready with all necessary hardware required for assembling the electronic part. For installing operating systems, codes and other software, you may follow the same techniques mentioned in the previous method. You can also craft case and bracelet as mentioned earlier. 9. Watches with Lights! 5 Best Luminous Watches to Tell Time in the Dark

Watches with Lights! 5 Best Luminous Watches to Tell Time in the Dark

In watchmaking, the illumination technology was initially introduced in tool-watches, specially created for military personals. The primary aim was to illuminate the dial of the watch for ensuring optimum visibility around the clock and in any light conditions. Initially, Radium-based luminescent material was employed for illuminating the hands and indexes on the dial. However, due to its radiation hazards, the watchmakers switched over to other modern technologies.  At present, watch brands make use of various methods to illuminate the dials of their timepieces. Two prominent examples are luminescent paint and tritium micro-gas tube. In this article, we highlight five top luminous watches currently available in the market. 1. Panerai Luminor Marina Fibratech™ 44mm (PAM01119) Source: Panerai Official Panerai has been known for the company’s rich heritage in the luminescence technology that provides optimum readability of the dial indications. The company has been utilizing luminescent features since the 1950s for its military watches. The Luminor family follows this tradition. The most recent addition to this collection is the Luminor Marina Fibratech™ 44mm limited edition watch.  The watch case is made with a unique material called Fibratech™, developed by Panerai. Equipped with twin spring barrels, the in-house automatic movement provides a power reserve of three days. Its anthracite dial with sunray finish and sandwich structure features large-hour markers and Arabic numerals. The dial hosts center hour & minute hands, small-seconds at 9H and date at 3H. Its outer-dial ring, hour markers, numerals and hands are embedded with Super-LumiNova with green luminescence.  The watch also employs Super-LumiNova on its crown, protective-bridge, locking-liver and strap. Made of Panerai SportechTM, the black strap features luminescent stitching. Water-resistant to a depth of 300 meters and endowed with superb luminescence, the Luminor Marina Fibratech™ 44mm is a perfect tool-watch for diving and night-missions. 2. Bell & Ross BR 03-92 FULL LUM  Source: Bell & Ross Official Bell & Ross has been renowned for its professional timepieces. One of the founding principles of this Swiss watch brand is optimum readability. The BR 03-92 FULL LUM watch proudly reflects this incredible legacy, but in a unique way by reversing the customary principles of luminescence. Instead of applying the luminescent materials to the hands and markers, Bell & Ross painted the entire dial with Superluminova®.  Now, the so-called graphic dial features non-luminescent hands and makers. In the absence of visible light, the watch-dial glows brilliantly and generously provides ultimate legibility. The BR 03-92 FULL LUM has a luminescent rubber bracelet. The BR 03-92 FULL LUM model has a matt-black ceramic case, which perfectly offsets the graphic dial. Fitted with a sapphire crystal glass, this 42 mm watch houses an automatic movement for operating the hours, minutes, seconds and date function. With its great luminescence and rugged exterior, this typical Bell & Ross Instruments watch is ideally suitable for night adventures and missions. 3. BALL Roadmaster Marine GMT Source: Instagram The BALL Roadmaster collection offers exceptional tool-watches incorporating the Swiss watch brand’s characteristic luminescence technology. Developed in Switzerland, the innovative and self-powered Micro Gas Tubes (H₃) are superior and brighter than luminescent paintings. The Roadmaster Marine GMT timepiece incorporates 28 self-powered micro gas tubes on its indicators (the hour, minute and GMT hands) and hour-markers. All the hands and 6, 9 and 12 numerals on the dial feature green radiance and the hour-index has an orange glow. This arrangement ensures exceptional readability of the dial around the clock. As a multiple time-zone watch, this model also incorporates a Bi-directional rotating ceramic bezel with a 24-hour scale illuminated with Super LumiNova. The watch displays hours, minutes, and sweep second, calendar and three time-zones with the patented quick set mechanism. The Swiss-made timepiece is equipped with a chronometer-certified automatic movement. It comes with a 42mm diameter, and a light-weight case made from titanium.  The Roadmaster Marine GMT also incorporates all other characteristics of a premium tool-watch, like scratch-proof sapphire crystals, screwed-in crowns and transparent case back. Water-resistant to 200 meters and endowed with superb antimagnetic (4,800A/m) and shock-resistance (5,000Gs) features, the BALL Roadmaster Marine GMT is a great tool-watch. Added with superb luminescence technology and multiple time-zone functions, it would be most suitable for professionals who frequently travel across the world. 4. It assures perfect visibility even in the most demanding environments. The watch uses Super-LumiNova for the direction indicator on the compass ring, external numerals on the dial and luminescent glass seal. Featuring great luminescence and compass functions, this all-terrain-watch is suitable for adventurers, outdoor-sports enthusiasts and hikers. 5. Victorinox Swiss Army Night Vision  Source: Victorinox The Night Vision watch by Victorinox Swiss Army incorporates a novel technology for illuminating its dial. It also offers some auxiliary light functions. Driven by a Ronda quartz movement, this Swiss-made timekeeping instrument features a 42mm diameter stainless steel case. The ingenious LED lighting system of this watch offers six functions, which can be activated by pressing the push button on the case.  The six light modes are Time Vision, Night Vision, Strobe, SOS, Locator and Battery end-of-life. These functions are managed by a Swiss-made electronic module exclusively designed for this timepiece. It has its own battery and runs on a circuit independent of the watch movement.  Gently pressing the dedicated button once will activate a blue LED light that illuminates the dial, allowing the wearer to read the time and date in all conditions. Interestingly, the hands and hour-markers are embedded with traditional luminescent materials. With the push-button, you can activate other functions like Night Vision, Strobe, SOS and Locator.  Lastly, a red LED flashes three times every 10 seconds to indicate that the battery needs to be replaced. Fitted with a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective sapphire crystal, the watch is water-resistant to 50 meters. Equipped with a unique lighting technology, which also provides some other useful functions in addition to illuminating the dial, this timepiece is a great daily beater watch.
