Panerai Watches

The Panerai Radiomir collection is one of the most significant watch collections in the history of horology. From its origin, as functional wartime watches to its evolution as one of the most sought-after luxury watches, it has come a long way. The history of Panerai goes back to the 1860s. At that time, the company established its first outlet and watchmaking school in Florence. The Panerai Radiomir collection, as we know it today, has its roots in the 1930s. Before the second world war era, Italy had ambitious plans for underwater secret missions. To serve the needs of the Italian Royal Navy, Panerai launched prototypes of a few robust and efficient diving watches. These watches would go on to become the famous Panerai Radiomir collection. They were now for their amazing legibility, toughness, and attention to detail. Panerai Radiomir 1940 would come later, drawing inspiration from these original prototypes.

For a long time after 1935, Panerai exclusively supplied watches to the Italian Royal Navy. Their business model did not take into account civilians. However, it helped them hone their watches to perfection. The result was amazing luxury watches that are capable of standing up to military standards. Things started changing when there was a change in leadership in 1997. That year, the first Panerai Radiomir watches were made commercially available. Before 1997, Panerai had worked on new prototypes, designs, and movements for many years. Some of the watches had all the qualities necessary for a luxury dress watch. However, they never strayed from their original vision of making efficient diving watches.

The prototypes and military-specific diving watches are the inspiration behind the Panerai Radiormir 1940 as we know it today. Over the years, there have been some stylistic and mechanical changes, but Panerai has stayed true to its original vision.

Horologists around the world agree that the Panerai Radiomir 1940 has paved the way for the brand's future. The watches were not only incredibly powerful and functional but also looked gorgeous. It would become to very important factor when they would be available to the public since 1997.

Even before the launch of the Panerai Radiomir in 1940, Panerai was making specialized diving watches for the Royal Italian Navy. At the turn of the second world war, military needs became more advanced and specialized. Panerai took on the challenge to match these additional requirements. The result was the watches that would go on to be known as the Panerai Radiomir 1940. Compared to the earlier models, the 1940 line was more robust and had more functionalities.

The most visible change was in the placement and design of the lugs. Unlike the older models, the Panerai Radiomir 1940 had thick lugs which were made of a uniform steel block. Another major change was the use of a short cylindrical crown instead of the older crowns which were larger and flared out.

The years between 1938 and 1970 saw the most extensive research and development in Panerai Radiomir watches. When the brand would open to the commercial market in 1997, these models would gain widespread popularity among watch connoisseurs and laypeople alike.

Key features of Panerai Radiomir 1940

The Panerai Radiomir 1940 collection is not famous without reason. There are many elements in this collection that can give any luxury watch in the world a run for its money.
