5 Surprising Things We Learned About The Rolex GMT

Introduction Rolex GMT is a grail watch of world travelers, who frequently set off intercontinental journeys for personal or professional reasons. A hot favorite of secondary and vintage markets, this timepiece enjoys an illustrious history that dates back to the 1950s. Since its induction in 1955, the rolex gmt family has evolved to produce a number of watchmaking icons highly sought-after by fine watch enthusiasts around the world. In this article, we will discuss about five amazing things in connection with the iconic GMT wristwatch. (1) Difference between GMT Master and GMT Master II When Rolex launched its GMT watch in 1955, it heralded a new era in the history of watchmaking. Specially created for aviators who operate long-haul flights, the first generation of this family is known as GMT Master. The special features include an Oyster case with external rotating bezel, and a self-winding movement with a date at 3 o’clock and an additional hour hand for displaying GMT. The rolex gmt master watches were produced from 1955 to the early 1990s. The last model to be released from the GMT Master series was reference 16700, which was introduced in 1989. The historical references from this prestigious wristwatch family are in high-demand in the vintage watch singapore market. Image Source: rolex.com/ The second generation of the GMT family was born in the 1980s after the company developed a new self-winding movement (caliber 3085) with an independently adjustable GMT hand. The first timepiece from the Rolex GMT Master II family (reference 16760) was launched in 1983. The most recent model in the present generation is Reference 126720 VTNR, the left hander’s version unveiled at this year’s “Watches and Wonders” event. All GMT Master II models introduced since 2015 are equipped with the Calibre 3285, which is more advanced and energy efficient. The most fundamental difference between the above two generations is the type of GMT mechanism used with the movements. The Master II series features independently adjustable 24-H hand that allows the watch to indicate three time-zones. In comparison, GMT master models feature a non-independent 24-H hand (which moves when you adjust the hour hand) thus display only two time-zones. (2) GMT Bezel The graduated 24-hour bezel is a signature feature of Rolex GMT watches. Majority of the models from this distinguished watch family feature dual-tone bezel for differentiating between the day (0600 to 1800) and night (1800 to 0600) on the 24-H scale of the bi-directional rotating bezel. The popular two-color themes include Blue & Red, Black & Red, Black & Blue and Black & Green. Initially, the company used Bakelite for manufacturing two-tone bezel-inserts. In the late 1950s, Rolex began equipping its GMT watches with aluminium bezels. The brand also offered their customers to replace Bakelite bezels of their wristwatches with more durable aluminium counterparts. Rare to find, the first generation GMT master models with the original Bakelite bezels are thus highly sought-after by rolex vintage watch collectors. In 2005, Rolex introduced the Cerachrom bezel-insert for the GMT Master II series with the 50th-anniversary white gold edition. This specially developed ceramic material is highly corrosion-resistant, scratch-proof and UV-resistant. The early generation Cerachrom bezel-inserts were single-toned. In 2013, the first GMT watch with a bi-color Cerachrom bezel-insert was launched. As of now, all the new GMT Master II models feature dual-tone bezels made of Cerachrom ceramic material. ROLEX GMT Master II 116710 LN The brand also used monotone bezels in some models. For example, the rolex gmt master ii black in steel (116710LN) features an all black bezel and a matching color dial. (3) Nicknames Most Rolex GMT watches come with interesting nicknames, from the popular Pepsi to the newly launched Sprite.  ROLEX GMT-Master II 1671016710 Black Red COKE The main inspiration for these names is the color theme of the particular model. For example, the rolex gmt pepsi name came from the dual tone “Blue and Red” bezel evoking the bottle cap of the famous American soft drink brand. The very first Rolex GMT watch featured the so-called Pepsi color bezel. Similarly, the GMT model with a “Black & Red” bezel is called Coke because it reminds us the signature color theme of Coca Cola. Another interesting designation is rolex gmt root beer, which features a distinct “black and brown” bezel combination evoking the color of a traditional North American soft drink made using the root bark of the sassafras tree. ROLEX GMT Master II 126710BLNR-0003 The rolex gmt batman got its name from its “black and blue” bezel theme reminiscent of distinctive costume of DC Comics’ fictional superhero Batman. There is a Batgirl too. Introduced in 2019, the GMT Master II 126710 BLNR is known as Batgirl. Sprite is the nickname given to the newly released “black and green” GMT Master II watch with the crown on the left side. (4) Weekend-proof Autonomy It usually refers to mechanical timepieces with longer power reserve so that the wearer can unworn the wristwatch on a Friday evening and worn it back on again on Monday morning without winding the movement. All the new GMT Master II models are equipped with the Manufacture Calibre 3285. Featuring the state-of-the-art Chronergy escapement, this self-winding movement has a power reserve of 70 hours, making the timepiece a truly weekend-proof watch. (5) Dials ROLEX GMT Master II 126719BLRO Although an eminently desirable wristwatch, the rolex gmt master ii is available in limited choice of dials. The frequently used dial colors are black, blue and green. The Oystersteel models usually come with black dials. The 18K white gold reference 126719BLRO-0002 is the only GMT Master II model with a meteorite dial. Summary Thanks to its illustrious history and astonishing features, Rolex GMT watch is a hot favorite of fine horology enthusiasts and seasoned timepiece collectors. ROLEX GMT Master II 126710blro-0002 The rolex gmt master ii price singapore for new models like 126710BLRO-0002 (Oyster steel case with Pepsi bezel and black dial) is approximately S$ 14,000 in the primary market. But due to its waiting list and excessive demand, the cost of Oystersteel versions goes above S$ 30K in the secondary market. The Everose gold and 18K white gold GMT Master II models have retail prices higher than S$ 50,000. The selling prices of vintage rolex GMT models are also exceptionally high due to roaring demand from passionate watch collectors. The first-generation references like 6542 (the first GMT master) and 1675 usually sell above S$ 20K in the vintage rolex singapore market.

The Beginner’s Guide to Maserati Watch

We actually don’t need to be a car enthusiast to know about the luxury vehicle brand Maserati and its flashy racing cars. Yet do you have some ideas about its watches? Lately in the high end fashion world, people are starting to notice the Maserati watches for their sleek design and relatively high quality.  How Maserati Started to Make Watches Maserati should be one of a few brands that require no introduction to most people in the world. Ever since its establishment in 1914, by the Maserati brothers in Bologna Italy, this Italian luxury brand has gained massive success and fame with its high-performing Formula 1 and GT as well as luxury road automobiles.  Upholding their rich heritage, its signature Trident Maserati logo has represented extravagance and status. Every product carrying its mark is also presented with the brand’s pride and quality. In addition to their overwhelmingly desired sports cars, Maserati has expanded their market with a series of well crafted timepieces for both modern men and women, offering a full look of Maserati style.  This highly-esteemed and award-winning giant skillfully makes use of its superior Italian design aesthetics and engineering, and incorporates them into their own timepieces. Featuring cutting edge designs, promising quality and budget friendly price range, the Maserati watch has captivated the hearts of both Maserati supporters and also racing watch enthusiasts who are willing to enjoy the legacy of the brand.  The production of Maserati watches began in 2012 when the brand formed a partnership with the renowned Italian watchmaker, Morellato. Facilitating Maserati’s journey in the watchmaking industry, the experienced watch manufacturer Morellato has been using its expertise to help Maserati develop and assemble their iconic watches as well as to build its name in the global watch market.  Today, Maserati is now half-owned by a Dutch corporation, the Stellantis N.V. group. And under its leadership, the brand continues to produce both quality luxury watches for men and women at an affordable package. Does the Maserati Watch Worth Buying?  You would probably ask this question since Marerati is known for its mastery of motorsports but not watchmaking, Well it is understandable as the brand is not even making the watches itself. However in my point of view it is actually quite an acceptable deal at such fair pricing for motorsports or car lovers.  In terms of design, the brand’s pure Italian artistry and distinct aesthetic are proficiently showcased in their notable watch collections. Their Sport and Lifestyle series both offer sporty and smart looking watches with flashy lavish appearances. These robust watches are equipped with sturdy protective mineral crystals covering the dial. Some of these notable models even feature open-heart skeleton dials which reflects the brand’s sophisticated attention to details.  Moreover, the strategy of its price range is another attractiveness while delivering such design, quality as well as the legacy of the brand. For a Maserati watch, the Singapore market is usually selling at a range around S$200 to S$500. So if you need a reliable and affordable fashion watch that carries a huge brand name to turn heads, a Maserati watch has got you covered. Features of Maserati Watch Models MASERATI Potenza R8851108007 To this date, Maserati has already kept a versatile collection offering an impressive selection of fashion watches. This collection aims to offer daring and stylish timepieces that turn everyone’s head on any occasion.  Inspired by the contemporary sports cars of the revered Italian brand, this outstanding collection has prominently incorporated aerodynamic profiles, extraordinary design details and exclusive features into their timepieces. 7. Blancpain: A Military Watch for Your Everyday Outfit

Blancpain: A Military Watch for Your Everyday Outfit

Reputed as the oldest watch brand amongst the existing ones, I bet that you have already known about Blancpain. Even though it is not as overwhelmingly discussed like other watch legends such as Rolex and Patek Philippe, the Blancpain name has enjoyed high respectation in the industry.  Actually what most of us know about this brand should be its deep roots with the military and its flagship military watch – the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms collection. Going through around 70 years of history and modifications, this iconic Blancpain diver watch has constantly brought significant success to the brand. With the revival models released in the 2010s, Blancpain has enjoyed another momentum of its time. Let’s learn more about how the brand connects with the military and its legendary military watch models.  The beginning Traced back to 1735, the Blancpain company was first established as a watchmaking workshop by Jehan-Jacques Blancpain at his home in Villeret. Ever since the beginning of Blancpain, the name had stood still for the production of prestigious timepieces. By the 1800s, Blancpain had already become the most prominent watchmaking brand in Villeret, Switzerland. The company further industrialized its manufacturations and sustained its place in the market from the American competitors.  In 1926, Blancpain joined a partnership with John Harwood, and began to produce its first automatic wristwatch. Since then the company has prided itself in using only mechanical movements, with no any digital components inside its watches.  In 1932, after the owner of the Blancpain company, Frédéric-Emile Blancpain, passed away, the family’s full management on the company came to an end while its only descender Berthe-Nellie had no interest in taking the rule of this watchmaking company. Then the two associates of Frédéric-Emile Blancpain, Betty Fiechter and André Léal, purchased the company and renamed it from Blancpain. The Villeret Manufacture to Rayville S.A., succ. de Blancpain. Its new name “Rayville” referrs a phonetic anagram of Villeret, the origin of the brand. Although the name and the management of the brand had changed, the brand’s value and quality remained and even further solidated. In 1950 Jean-Jacques Fiechter joined hands with his aunt Betty Fiechter into the management core of the company and inserted new energy and strategies to the company. In 1953, the brand had started its long relationship with the military navy units.  Deep roots in military watches BLANCPAIN Fifty Fathoms 5000-0130-B52 A Blancpain has an exciting history in diver watches and their military-issued timepieces are among the most coveted ones. Its most notable Fifty Fathoms was first developed for military use. It was initially custom made to cater the specifications of France’s elite vmilitary unit, which was called Frogmen, akin to American Navy combat specialized SEAL units. Back in 1952, the French navy’s “frogmen”, which we call combat swimmers today, needed a reliable diver watch that could meet the demands and stresses for their operations and yet no one took up the challenge. Finally, the founders of the unit approached Blancpain’s CEO at the time, Jean-Jacques Fiechter, for the answer. Jean-Jacques Fiechter happened to be also a diver himself and he understood pretty well what the navy would need for a professional tool watch. He accepted such a challenge and set forth creating this new watch, which has later become the most successful piece of the brand. In 1953, the legendary Fifty Fathoms, was released. Since then, the Fifty Fathoms has been a benchmark or reference for divers watches. Later the brand also especially created timepieces for other military units. In 1957, the hyper-specialized watches, the MIL-SPEC I and MIL-SPEC II models were first produced to address the very specific requests of the United States Navy. The most distinctive feature of this military watch is its hemispheric moisture indicator placed on the bottom half of the dial.  Fifty Fathoms BLANCPAIN Villeret 6654-1127-55B To this date, Blancpain is housing a wide range of collections in different styles, including the classic dress watch lineups Ladybird and Villeret tourbillon Watch, as well as its professional tool series, Air Command chronograph watch and the iconic Fifty Fathoms. As mentioned, the Fifty Fathoms diver’s watch was first released in 1953, which is the same year as the release of the Rolex Submariner. The initial model was specially made for the military use of the elite French Navy combat unit “Les Nageurs de Combat”, or “Frogmen”. Later the Fifty Fathom watch has further spread its name after the famous actor Jacques Cousteau wore it in the legendary film, “The Silent World”. BLANCPAIN Fifty Fathoms 5015-12B30-B52A The first Fifty Fathoms was built in 42mm diameter. Its case was made with robust stainless steel and was equipped with double O-ring gaskets to securely seal the crown. This first model offered a water-resistance of 50 fathoms, which was indicated in its name. Fathoms are a British unit for the measurement of depth, which is equivalent to 6 feet or 1.83 meters. The Fifty Fathoms actually rated to 300ft, or to be exact, 91.5m. Indeed with years of technical improvements, the updated variations are now offering at least 300 m or 1000 ft of water resistance, with more refined design and additional features.  As a legible diver watch, the dial of the Fifty Fathoms Blancpain watch is well designed to ensure excellent underwater readability. Although the radium used for the indexes of the original model was proved to be dangerous that released radioactive toxins, the company had quickly replaced it with non-radioactive luminescent coat for the later models. The tribute models to Fifty Fathoms released in 2010, have clearly referenced its non-radioactive credentials on the dial. BLANCPAIN Fifty Fathoms 5200-0130-B52A Grounding with the enormous success of this signature model, Fifty Fathoms has been extended to a versatile collection that appeals to a much broader audience in the market who are fond of sporty robust styles. It is not just a house of diver watches, but an impressive range that includes flyback chronograph versions and even tourbillon versions. Being a historical and esteemed name in the world of haute horlogerie, each Blancpain watch is proudly made to be part of our children’s inheritance. Blancpain continues to explore new ways in watchmaking technologies and keep a beautiful balance of traditions and modern designs. Let’s keep an eye and be excited for every new breakthrough of this watch legend.

  8. The Success of Zenith Chronomaster Sport

The Success of Zenith Chronomaster Sport

Zenith never disappoint us with its updated models in every new release. In 2021, Zenith introduced its avant-garde Zenith Chronomaster Sport and gained massive success without surprises. This award winning Zenith watch revived the brand’s iconic blue, gray and anthracite overlapping subdials from the original A386 El Primero chronograph of 1969. It reminds us of the old golden era with the most advanced watchmaking technologies.  Garnering both popularity and fame amongst the mass watch admirers and professional experts, Zenith Chronomaster has again set a new golden benchmark for luxury automatic chronograph watches.  The Birth of Zenith El Primero Caliber ZENITH Chronomaster Automatic 03.3200.3600/69.c902 Whenever we speak of the renowned Swiss watchmaker Zenith, it is always associated with the brand’s signature chronograph watch. The brand has been constantly pushing the boundaries of mechanical timekeeping accuracy.  With its famed movement, the Zenith El Primero, Zenith has been pioneering in the field of chronometry over the world of horology for decades. This Le Locle-based watch manufacturer is still keeping the world record for chronometry Observatory Prizes to this date. The first El Primero caliber was unveiled in 1969 and reached a real milestone for the brand’s developmental history.  The Zenith El Primero was the world’s first integrated chronograph caliber with a high frequency and performance. It ran at an uncommonly high frequency of 36,600 vph (5 Hz), that the integrated chronograph inside could record elapsed times to the 1/10th second.  Born in the tough era for traditional watchmaking, the revolutionary caliber had successfully helped the brand survive from the serious Quartz Crisis and brought a new wave to the world of horology. Ever since its launch, the El Primero has become the key strength of the success of this Swiss watch brand.  Most watches of the current Zenith watch family are now using this powerful movement, while equipped with the brand’s signature sub-dial details. Encapsulating both high quality parts and sleek design, the Zenith watch is one of the best picks that turn heads on every occasion.  The Release of Zenith Chronomaster Sports Collection ZENITH El Primero Sport Chronograph 03.2280.400/01.C713 While already housing a number of exquisite timepieces powered by El Primero, Zenith released a specific chronograph collection, the Zenith Chronomaster in 1994. It was created as a lineup of high-end mechanical chronograph watches that include the brand’s prowess and mastery of complications.  The Chronomaster models are introduced as a faithful re-edit of the brand’s most emblematic models from the 1960s to 1970s. They are available in a wide range of versions in different styles and configurations including its most popular skeleton and open heart options.  ZENITH Chronomaster Revival EL Primero 03.A384.400/21.M384 Showcasing Zenith’s rich legacy and mastery of chronograph movements, the Zenith El Primero Chronomaster models are always powered by its most advanced movements. The newest Zenith Chronomaster Sports models are no exception.  Released in 2021, the Chronomaster Sport is positioned as the culmination of the brand’s proficiency on sporty automatic chronographs. Featuring the latest El Primero movement with a 1/10th of a second increment and the most advanced innovations, the Zenith Chronomaster Sport watch was even awarded the “Chronograph Prize” at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève 2021 “Chronograph” prize. Gaining considerable popularity, Zenith expanded the Chronomaster Sport collection with a few more new iterations in 2022. Together with the premium two-tone version and full gold versions, its steel version with a tri-colour ceramic bezel has grabbed the most attention in the global market.  Features of Zenith Chronomaster Sport Equipped with the latest generation of the El Primero, this Zenith chronograph sports model is well crafted in a sporty-chic contemporary profile. It has skillfully combined the most symbolic design elements of Zenith watches such as the tri-colour sub-dials as well as the most updated watchmaking advancements. Such sophistication is probably the reason for what the collectors are falling for.  Exceptional Movement ZENITH Chronomaster Automatic 03.3200.3600/21.M3200 To be short, this renowned 1/10th El Primero movement is more precise than other regular chronographs which take one count per 60 seconds. It will take exactly 1/10th of a second increments, instead of a second, to record its long red-tipped center sweep hand.  To be frank the Chronomaster Sport is not the first 1/10th chronograph watch in the industry while Zenith itself and even other brands such as Tag Heuer and Longines already have them before. It is also not the first 1/10th El Primero since there is already a limited El Primero Striking edition released in only 1969 pieces ten years ago. Moreover, it is also not the most precise chronograph of the brand since there is already a 1/100th chronograph in the Defy 21 lineup released in 2018.  Then, what makes the new Chronomaster Sport so impressive to have drawn such massive discussion? Its new El Primero 3600 movement is Zenith’s fully developed and latest 1/10th caliber which is not a limited edition but an available-now piece. Topped with the sophisticated craftsmanship and latest watchmaking advancements, this El Primero-equipped watch is well considered as one of the best crafted timepieces of the brand’s current catalog.  Revival of Iconic Sub-dials ZENITH Chronomaster Revival Shadow 97.T384.4061/21.C822 In addition to its highly appraised movement, the incorporation of its vintage resurrected sub-dials is also one key feature of the watch. The design of this new Zenith sports watch has carried some features under the influences of the brand’s retro models including the Chronomaster Revival Manufacture Version and Zenith Chronomaster A385 Revival model. The 41 mm Chronomaster Sport features the emblematic set of subdials in the iconic El Primero colors: blue, anthracite, and light gray, which faithfully resemble the subdials on the vintage A386 model released in 1969.  Refined Case and Bezel The 41 mm case is further polished with appealing satin and mirror finishes on its curves and facets, where the shining parts and matte parts connect seamlessly from lugs to bracelet links.  For the steel standard versions, the case is paired with a jet black ceramic bezel which is more scratch resistant. It enhances the look to be cleaner and well-balanced sitting next to its signature tri-color sub-dials.  With the introduction of the Chronomaster Sport series, the brand has presented its most advanced and optimized El Primero caliber and introduced its fully equipped models. The Zenith Chronomaster Sport is housing all the brand’s best essences available from the past and today.
